Fatalities rise during the months of April through August as enthusiasts take to their bikes traversing the open roads. The impact of these crashes can be shattering, ranging from loss of life, permanent brain injury, and amputation, not to mention serious financial injury. Here are some tips to help us all keep motorcyclists safe on our roadways.

TIPS FOR AUTOMOBILE DRIVERS / RESPECT MOTORCYCLES

  • Check intersections before turning.
  • Watch blind spots when changing lanes.
  • Respect motorcyclists like other drivers.
  • Maintain a four-second gap in following distance.
  • Be aware of passing motorcycles.
  • Give a full lane when passing.
  • Keep your eyes open for bikers who might be close by.
  • Avoid distractions while driving including cellphone usage.
  • Always yield the right-of-way to motorcyclists.

TIPS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS / BE SAFE

  • Wear a helmet and other safety gear.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Pay special attention at intersections.
  • Avoid driving your motorcycle in bad weather.
  • Take a motorcycle safety course.
  • Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on your motorcycle.
